Central Texas veterans get free dental care

WACO, Texas - 40 veterans in McLennan County received free dental care on World Oral Health Day.

Aspen Dental brought its 42-foot long Mouth Mobile to Waco on Tuesday to offer the free service. The vehicle is a dental office on wheels staffed with local dentists and hygienists.

Nearly 150 million Americans did not see a dentist last year. This is just over half of the adult population. Many of them are veterans who do not have access to dental benefits. This service is looking to fill this need.

"Veterans are one of the most underserved in the sense of their dental needs. They tend to be the most neglected," says Aspen Dental Managing Clinical Director Dr. Rashad Altawaty. "With the VA, unless you are 100 percent disabled, you're not going to get any dental coverage. So having access to care and having this van traveling to underserved areas is a great opportunity to help our local community and help the people that have served our country."

The Mouth Mobile travels all over the country, and is set to visit 30 cities this year. Their next stop is Portland, Oregon.
