Opening statements begin in Carrizal trial

WACO, Texas - UPDATE, 4:12 p.m.: The trial has gone into recess, and is expected to start back up Thursday at 9:00 a.m.

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m.: The witness says she's never seen Christopher Jacob Carrizal before. She stepped off of the stand. The judge and attorneys are now inside of the chambers.

UPDATE, 4:02 p.m.: The state passed the witness to defense. The witness tells the defense she now has PTSD because of the shooting. The witness says she knows the Bandidos as a "biker gang."

UPDATE, 3:53 p.m.: The witness says she's never seen a huge group of Cossacks like the day of the shooting. She says it's unusual they weren't ordering. The witness says someone started yelling there was a fight. She described hearing the first "pop", and then hearing several more. She says she heard gunfire, but didn't see it.

The witness says she tried to leave, but then saw bikers running with guns - so she ran back inside the restaurant scared. She says the manager told the staff to hide inside of the freezers. She was in the freezer for about 20 minutes.

When she finally came out of the freezer, she says she saw lots of bikers with their hands up and then saw police carry a biker and his arm fell off. The witness started shaking and tearing up. She said it was hard for her to go back to that memory.

UPDATE, 3:41 p.m.: The first witness worked at Twin Peaks, and says she was the cook. She started two months before the shooting occurred. She says she knew there was supposed to be a biker event and wanted to work extra hours. The state is having the witness describe pictures of Twin Peaks restaurant and it's perimeters.

UPDATE, 3:38 p.m.: Gotro is asking the judge to remove three police officers from other agencies sitting in the courtroom. Judge Johnson is allowing them to stay with a court order to not speak about the case.

The jury is walking back into the courtroom, and the first witness called by the state is about to testify.

UPDATE, 3:20 p.m.: Reyna says Carrizal rode with the VP to Twin Peaks with the brothers to rectify the battle with the Cossacks. Reyna tells the jury this was not an isolated incident, but a crescendo of conflict occurring over a year.

Reyna then concluded his opening statements, and the judge asked the witnesses to leave the courtroom until they are called.

Judge Johnson calls for a recess, and the jury has left the courtroom.

UPDATE, 3:11 p.m.: Reyna described what the Cossacks and Bandidos "club" is about to the jury. He says, "Bandidos have always controlled Texas."

UPDATE, 3:01 p.m.: District Attorney Abel Reyna gives prosecutors opening statement.

UPDATE, 2:38 p.m.: The jury has entered the room, and the Carrizal trial is about to start.

The jury is seated in the trial of Christopher Jacob Carrizal.

This came after Judge Matthew Johnson called the names of those selected to serve on the trial.

The rest of the jury pool was released, and Johnson thanked everyone for their service.

People were expressing a sign of relief to be excused.

There is currently a lunch recess until 2:30 p.m.
