Mold in Bellmead Civic Center

BELLMEAD, TX - The City of Bellmead needs to remove mold from the Civic Center.

Tuesday evening the city leaders will vote on spending more than $12,000 for the project.

And that's just for one room with mold in it.

Walter Velez, who works in Bellmead area is concerned about mold in the building.

He says, "There are molds that are very dangerous. We cannot have public buildings in the shape of third world countries."

Velez continues," It doesn't mean that they will spend $12,000 but that means they will have that money to shop around. And they gonna have to find someone qualified to do that kind of treatment."

The 50-year-old center has three main rooms.

The center's director Tony Torres blames a leak in the roof for the mold.

And to protect the public from health hazards -- they keep that one room shut since last month.

Velez says, "You have all kinds of people coming in at all times including employees that are there that need to be protected. Somebody who has allergies is prone to get very sick in the building that do have mold because you know their defenses are not the same as somebody that is healthy."

Velez says removing mold is a lot of work.

"They gonna have to remove all the insulation, which is once it gets wet it gets destroyed. They gonna have to remove all the sheetrock and throw it away."

But he hopes the city will spend his tax dollars wisely.

If approved, the work can start in a week.

No word yet when it would be finished.
