Veterans Begin Work on Local Widow's Home

GROESBECK, Texas - Last week, we brought you the story of Edna Faye Harris and how her husband was building her dream home when he passed away last year.

Local veterans have since stepped up to make this finished project a reality, and are now walking through the house to decide what needs to happen to move on.

Boris Morring, the National Aide-de-Camp for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, says he has a lot of respect for Oscar Harris, Jr. and how he built the house all by himself.

"I think about if that was me in that situation, and if I was no longer here, would my veteran battle buddies help and get that situation taken care of in my absence?," Morring asks.

Waco Home Depot Manager Jeremy Klein says it is part of their culture to help families like Edna's.

"We are always looking at ways to help with veterans, children, youth at risk. We just enjoy doing them," Jeremy says.

"We believe in giving back to the community, growing the community, and being involved in projects that help people. And its our way of giving back," explains Bellmead Home Depot Manager Shelley Klein.

Home Depot employees and local engineers did a walkthrough of the house to figure out what will go where.

"That way, we have something down. And what I'll do when I get back to my office is do the elevation, and by the end of the weekend we will have a working elevation and we can do the whole entire layout and we'll have something the folks can see. Where the sink is going to go, and how the kitchen will look," explains project engineer Esmund Fox.

The house is about 2,500 square feet, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

"It's a very large scale project. She's going to need a lot of assistance," Shelley says. "There is plumbing work that needs to be done, electrical work that's going to need to be done, a kitchen built, flooring throughout the house, dry wall, painting. Basically, it's a shell. So we are going to have to do everything to finish it out. To make it a livable state for her."

The blueprint is finished, and it is now time to starting working on the house. Next week, you will be there as veterans start the work to make Edna's dream home a reality.
