Waco, TX - The Baylor Bears will open play in their third NIT under Scott Drew, on Tuesday when they welcome in Wagner to the Ferrell Center.
Coach Drew admitted he and his team were disappointed when they first learned they did not make it into the 'Big Dance'. But the disappointment quickly turned to optimism for the opportunity to play some post season basketball on their home floor.
"There's nothing like playoff basketball," Drew said. "It's win or go home mentality, its that experience that your players get in the postseason, really goes a long way, for the following year especially, not only is it exciting for the Fans to see, but The NIT is completely different than it's been in the past, with the great coverage that ESPN gives it, I mean you get tremendous publicity being in the NIT."
The Bears were one of a handful of bubble teams that were left out of the NCAA Tournament, and now they are one of many quality teams in this NIT field.
"This year it seemed like there were more quality teams than ever on the bubble," Drew said. "Obviously those teams are now in the NIT Field, So there's a lot of big name players and great programs, and everybody's excited to keep playing because March is the best time to play, and the most exciting time to play. Usually the teams that want to keep playing, do a little bit better when it comes this time of year and having a chance to be on the home court really gives you an advantage."
The Bears are 9-1 all time in the NIT under Coach Scott Drew.
