Bell County commissioners delay interviews to replace justice of the peace

Local

The Bell County Commissioners Court postponed interviews scheduled for Tuesday to fill the seat of Claudia Brown because of illness.

There are four candidates for the seat:

– Ernest Lee Wilkerson
– Louie Minor
– Nicola James
– Daryl Keith Peters

A jury removed Bell County Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown from her position Feb. 13th after finding her incompetent to continue in the courtroom.

When Commissioners unanimously decided to let the Bell County Democratic Party nominate three people to replace her, their reasoning was that a Democrat won the seat, so Democrats should keep the seat.

Bell County Democratic Party Chairperson Chris Rosenberg turned over a packet of candidates for the position on Monday.

She told FOX44 News the party was mainly looking for someone who has law enforcement or courtroom experience.

“It’s my job to make sure that they are qualified and that they are Democrats,” Rosenberg says.

To be eligible for the position, a nominee must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, mentally competent, have no felony convictions, been a Texas resident for one year and lived in Bell County for six months.

The interviews with the candidates has been reset for March 19th.
