Calvert officer dead in crash near Salado


The Department of Public Safety reports one person killed in a two vehicle accident near Salado early on the morning of the Fourth of July.

The victim was identified as an off duty Calvert police officer, 32-year-old James Arrick, Jr.

DPS spokesman Sgt Dave Roberts says the crash occurred about 3:10 a.m. just north of the roadside park in southern Bell County.

A 2012 Kenworth truck-tractor semi-trailer was parked on the east shoulder of the roadway.

A 2015 Dodge pickup that was northbound drifted off the roadway and struck the ear of the parked 18-wheeler.

 Arrick was the driver and sole occupant of the pickup.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement issued by the Calvert Police Department said he had been a police officer for ten years and had been with the City of Calvert for two years.

Funeral arrangements were pending Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of the Kenworth was identified as 64-year-old Juan Garcia of McAllen who was not hurt. 

The accident occurred near the 282 mile marker on the northbound side of the interstate.
