The Salvation Army of Waco says with the soaring temperatures, it is important we all chill out and take a break from the summer heat.
They are operating a cooling center at their Community Kitchen facility, located at 300 Webster Avenue. The downtown center is also where hungry individuals and families can receive a free meal.
This downtown location serves as a cooling center for the summertime, and as a heating center for the winter. A portion of the facility also serves as the Red Shield Men’s Lodge for those seeking emergency shelter or wanting to participate in their long-term Re-Housing program. Those seeking help can also meet one-on-one with case managers based at this location.
The organization says access to cooling centers is critical. At-risk groups include children under four, adults over age 65, those with medical conditions or in poor health and those without access to air conditioning.
The Salvation Army of Waco is opening their doors for anyone needing shelter from the heat. If you want to lend a helping hand, you can donate bottled drinks, snacks or funds to help offset the added costs of the cooling center. Volunteers can also help serve meals or serve in other capacities.
