The American Legion Post 222 in Hamilton, TX is in desperate need of donations after someone vandalized their building this week.
26 Girl Scouts about to hold their weekly meeting Monday evening discovered the break-in.
“I come in to have our meeting and I open the door and it’s disaster everywhere, glass, big rocks, the building was ransacked and the office was gone through,” said Joanne Whitlock, Girl Scout Leader for Troop #4332.
Organizers are still trying to piece together exactly what happened at the American Legion Post.
“The damage they did just makes us uneasy to know that somebody is going to come in and trash the building like that, papers and doors and windows, busted up,” said Glenn Jones, Adjutant and Finance Officer for American Legion Post 222 Cunningham.
They say it’s nothing like they’ve ever seen before.
“The coffee pot was on, so I was like, someone’s here and they are making a mess for some reason. And cookies, they enjoyed cookies,” said Whitlock.
The intruders broke a large 4’X 6′ window about 1/4 inch thick, damaged doors and left a mess, but they are thankful the damage wasn’t worse.
“That was our worst fear because they did make coffee and ate cookies and stuff, but they left the coffee machine on so luckily we got here before it was too late and nothing burned down or anything life that,” said Jones.
Now, both organizations are asking for donations from the community to fix those damages and make significant security upgrades.
“We need cameras and security because we have a lot of lock ins here, the girl scouts do and we want to be safe when they are here,” said Whitlock.
They have one message to whoever is responsible:
“We work on a tight budget almost all American Legion buildings, they work on a very tight budget, they’re money pretty much just goes to help kids in the community and I don’t think this was very patriotic or American thing to do,” said Jones.
The Hamilton Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
