EXCLUSIVE: Wiring stripped from new hotel, one man arrested

Local

What is described as “considerable damage” was done to a new hotel still under construction in Lacy Lakeview early Tuesday morning.

Wiring was ripped out of walls, but one man was arrested on site.

Lacy Lakeview Police Chief John Truehitt says his officers were assisted by Bellmead Police, TSTC Police and the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office after an alarm was tripped at the site of the new hotel being built in the 4500 block of Interstate 35 at around 3:08 a.m.

The construction company working on the large, four-story structure, has had a man staying on site, and he told officers it appeared someone was on the fourth floor of the building.

With the assistance of the other agencies, the building was surrounded and a search began. Bellmead officers later caught the man.

Mark Lindsay Gregg was arrested and charged with Burglary of a Building. He was taken to the McLennan County Jail.

Site Project Manager Walter Anders says Gregg stole about $5,000 worth of copper wiring in two previous visits to the site.

“He was stealing enough just to make it irritating to the contractors, and of course you’ve got to pay these guys to redo it again,” Anders says.

Anders told officers he was rolling up the wire and was going to leave it outside to be picked up later.

Chief Truehitt said he was being considered a suspect in another theft at the same location.
