HILLSBORO, TX - A former pastor and Truett Seminary student has been sentenced to twenty years in prison after entering pleas to five charges relating to having sex with a thirteen year old girl.
Benjamin William Nelson was arrested in February 2017 after the girl's mother caught the pair in Nelson's car.
He was initially arrested by Whitney Police on a charge of online solicitation of a minor, with indictments later handed down for five total charges.
He was indicted on two counts of online solicitation of a minor, two counts of indecency with a child and one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
The investigation determined that the pair had met on line through Snap Chat.
Nelson appeared in 66th District Court with members of his family and three attorneys.
The mother of the victim provided a victim impact statement that was given directly to the judge but was not read in open court.
Nelson was a pastor at Peoria Baptist Church at the time of his arrest.
In addition to serving his sentence, Nelson will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
