Is your car ready for winter?

Local

With freezing temperatures ahead, it’s important to have a safe and reliable car when hitting the road.

Waco’s Texas Star Tire & Auto Repair Shop is reminding drivers that now is the time to winterize their cars.

Owner Devlin Cole says it is a lot easier to prevent car problems than dealing with them – plus he says it can be a lot cheaper.

FOX44 spoke with Baylor student Reese Hummel, who brought in his car to get everything checked out.

“It is not just about having one thing break down or getting into an accident, but it is about reliability and being able to start the car every time,” Hummel says.

Cole urges everyone to have their cars winterized.

“Mother Nature is unpredictable. You never know what she’s gonna do – especially in Texas. Being stranded when it is hot outside, that’s one thing. But when it’s cold and you are stranded, that is another,” Cole says.

Cole explains protecting your engine with antifreeze, checking your brakes and having an oil change are essential. He reminds drivers to only use windshield fluid, rather than water, and keeping a gas tank at least half full at all times. Drivers are urged not to forget about their tires, either.

“Check your air pressure when the temperature drops because you can actually have a drop in your tire pressures,” Cole says.

Every car should have an emergency kit. Cole recommends having, “Fresh batteries, a blanket, a flashlight, jumper cables because cold weather has a tendency to make a battery dead.”

Hummel knows the consequences of neglecting your car.

“You don’t wanna be broken down on the side of the road,” Hummel says.

The Texas Department of Transportation says crews are getting ready to treat bridges and overpasses with a solution to make them not slick.
