Laundry detergent eating challenge

WOODWAY, TX - A new craze is now taking over social media that has local doctors and parents worried.

The Pods Challenge encourages kids to eat laundry detergent pods.

There are many videos of kids posting themselves doing the challenge, all without realizing the serious consequences.

Helen Kelly's daughter Kiarra goes to Waco High School and they recently had a talk about this challenge.

Kelly says, "To me it would be as bad as challenging someone to go and jump off the bridge."

She says it is up to parents to save their kids from a tragedy.

"If they are not hearing it from their parent at home don't do this or do this who they can expect to hear it from these days?"

She says such dangerous dares are all about peer pressure.

Dr. Joylin Cover at Providence Medical Center says she has seen the harm caused by laundry detergent.
"There are very serious side effects from ingesting these pods, there can be serious internal burns and injuries, as well as shortness of breath, even coma and eventually death."

Even manufacturers warn about the harm both in English and Spanish right on the packaging.

Kelly says the key to keep her daughter safe is constant communication.

"Just because you've said something to your children doesn't necessarily mean that in a month that's gonna stick with them."

She keeps reminding her and her grandchildren that chemicals don't belong in the mouth.

Dr. Cover says if your child ends up eating the laundry detergent, call 9-1-1 or take them to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Providence is part of Ascension, the largest non profit health system in the U.S. and the world's largest Catholic health system.
