Man hit by car and killed on I-35

Waco police say a man struck by a vehicle on I-35 near the Baylor area Thursday evening has died.

A police department spokesperson said the call on the accident came in at 8:38 p.m.

The accident occurred on I-35 near the Dutton Avenue area not far from the Baylor University campus.

Police spokesman Patrick Swanton said that dispatchers had initially received a report of a man who appeared to have been intentionally walking into traffic in the south bound lanes of I-35

Police say at least one vehicle swerved to keep from hitting the man,  later identified as 72-year-old Donald Sanford.

A second vehicle, a 2014 Ford Fusion that was going south struck Sanford.

The female driver of the Fusion was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Sanford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say no charges are being filed in the case at this point as it appeared Sanford was intentionally walking in a traffic lane and was wearing dark clothing.

Bellmead police assisted with notification of next of kin..
