The Department of Public Safety has confirmed that the man who died in a Wednesday afternoon crash in Milam County was 77-year-old Louis Smith of Caldwell.

Smith was the driver of a 2006 Dodge pickup that was going south on State Highway 36 about three and a half miles  south of Milano about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The investigating trooper said that Smith slowed down, pulled onto the right shoulder,  then began a left turn across the highway, directly into the path of a 2002 Kenworth truck-tractor semi trailer rig that had also been going south.

The 18-wheeler hit the pickup on the driver side.

Louis Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in pickup, identified as 46-year-old Louis Smith, Jr, also of Caldwell, was taken to CHI St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan with what were described as incapacitating injuries.

The driver of the Kenworth, identified as 26-year-old Carlos Gonzalez of Miami Beach, Florida, was not injured.

The roadway was blocked for about four hours for the investigation and cleanup.
