Local

The City of Copperas Cove released the name Friday morning of a man killed when a train hit him Thursday. He has been identified as 29-year-old Kurtis Michael Roemeling.

According to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad employees, Roemeling was walking west on the railroad tracks adjacent to the 1200 block of FR 1113 (W. Avenue B). The train was traveling west and approaching the location of the pedestrian.

The train operator noticed him and immediately activated the emergency stopping system for the train while signaling with the horn. The operator says Roemeling did not move out of the way before being struck.

He suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced dead on the scene by Justice of the Peace F.W. “Bill” Price.

The train consisted of seven cargo cars and two engines. Four of the cars were empty at the time of the collision and three were loaded with various commodities.

The Copperas Cove Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident.
