MCGREGOR, TX - A McGregor police officer chased a burglary suspect down on foot and not only apprehended the suspect, but recovered jewelry and other items taken in a break in Monday afternoon.
Neighbors of the home that was entered in the 800 block of Fillmore Street noticed two men coming out of a backyard and, knowing no one was supposed to be home at 2:00 p.m. called police.
The neighbor was also able to get a picture of the men coming out carrying a bag.
He noted which way they went and guided officers as they arrived.
One officer spotted them on 10th street and gave chase on foot, catching up with one of them, later identified as Joseph Lee Elliot.
Officers back at the house found that a screen had been torn from the house and entry was made through a back window.
While a privacy fence had hidden the actual break in from view, the neighbor spotted them coming out of the yard and throwing something into a trash can, which turned out to be the broken pieces of the screen they removed to gain entry.
Elliot was booked into the McLennan County Jail on charges of burglary of a habitation and evading arrest.
Police say they have a warrant for the other suspect.
