LEROY, TX - Several streets in the small community of Leroy in McLennan County were closed off Tuesday afternoon as McLennan County deputies attempted to negotiate with a man upset about losing custody of his children.
A sheriff's office spokesman said that 43 year old Robert Smith was upset about Child Protective Services removing his children from his home and had gone to the home of a relative in Leroy and created a disturbance.
Deputies were called and told the man had weapons and that shots had been fired.
The were called shortly before noon and set up a perimeter, keeping the man under observation until shortly after two o clock.
There was then an attempt to subdue the man with non lethal means, firing bean bags.
However, at some point in this, he pulled out a handgun and a sniper who had been watching the proceedings fired one shot with the man being wounded.
He has been transported to a hospital with his condition unknown at mid afternoon.
