Suspect claims face shooting accidental

BELTON, TX - According to court documents, a man arrested for shooting his girlfriend in the face says he had been playing with a weapon and it fired accidentally.

Jose Angel Torres was arrested by Belton police in connection with the shooting which took place about 11:30 a.m. April 17 at a home in the 3200 block of West US Highway 190 ( I-14).

When police responded to that location, officers found the victim, identified as Julia Gonzalez, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the face.

The arrest affidavit says that officers began to apply pressure to the wound and that the victim was able to tell a police sergeant on the scene that she had been in the kitchen of the home and had been shot.

The affidavit further states that later at the hospital, she told the sergeant she had been sitting at the kitchen table with Torres and had been watching a tv show on the suspect's cell phone when the shooting took place.

The court papers quote her as saying Torres did not want her to call 9-1-1, but that after calling her sister-in-law and her mother-in-law she did call for assistance.

The affidavit said Torres told officers he ahd thrown the gun away in a field, but a .38 caliber revolver with what appeared to be blood spots on it was found in a leather bag sitting on the kitchen table.

Paperwork says that Torres was given legal warnings and gave a written statement claiming the shooting was accidental.
