Waco Animal Shelter reaches full capacity

Interested citizens are encouraged to help

WACO, Texas - All area partner-cities and Animal Care Officers currently have no place to put additional dogs and cats at the Waco Animal Shelter.

The shelter is at capacity with intake kennels filled with rescued animals awaiting shelter space. Medium and large kennels are full, and only four small kennels and medical kennels are open at this time.

Animal Care Officers and Shelter Staff are trying everything possible to locate the owners of dogs they have rescued from the streets of Waco to return them to their homes to avoid bringing them to the shelter. Partner cities of the shelter are doing the same.

Citizens interested in helping during this time of overflow are invited to consider providing a foster home to animals, adopt an animal of their own or donate funds to help potential owners with adoption fees.

The Humane Society of Central Texas says giving the dogs and cats in our community a home depends entirely on area citizens being responsible pet owners. They say Animal Care Officers, staff and volunteers at the shelter need citizens’ help during this stressful time of overcrowding.

Options available which directly impact the animal population include free spaying and neutering options for pets of Waco residents. You can go here for more information or call (254) 752-SPAY (7729). Microchipping your pets (and updating your current residence) is also vital to Animal Care officers in the field being able to return strays to their owners. Options are available for this, as well.
