WACO, Texas - A Texas law firm listed Waco Monday as the eighth most place in the state to be killed by a drunk driver.
Waco Police say most of the drunk driving accidents happen near the downtown bars along Waco Drive.
Bartenders like Gary Cassell at The Backyard in Waco make sure drunk customers have a safe ride home.
"They are cut off, second one is we give them some time to get their head straight, we give them water, make sure that they get a safe ride home, if they are with their group," said Cassell.
A Houston law firm ranks Waco number eight out of ten Texas cities with the highest drunk driving deaths between 2013 and 2017.
However, Waco Police say this number is skewed. Twelve fatal crashes in a four-year span, police saying some included a drunk pedestrian.
"We don't have a lot of say, so when it comes to people making those kind of choices, unfortunately. And typically, when law enforcement gets involved, it's after the fact," said Sgt. Patrick Swanton.
Tracking this by the hour, police say drunk driving spikes between midnight and 4:00 a.m., with most alcohol-related wrecks happening on the weekends.
"Weekends are busy for everybody, especially with our concerts and stuff. Again, we staff up to make sure that we don't have those issues," said Cassell.
According to crash reports, there have been 23 alcohol related crashes since January. None of them have been fatal so far.
