Studies show vaping is more popular than smoking tobacco, and it’s evident as new vape shops are popping up everywhere around Central Texas.
The City of Hewitt is also getting in on the trend, opening up the new store It’s Vapor Time. The only issue community members have with its location is that it’s right across the street from Midway Middle School and Midway High School.
“Personally, as a parent, I don’t think it’s a great idea. I don’t like it,” says Midway Middle School parent Shawn Holden.
“I don’t have any concerned about it,” says Bobby Moles, mother of three.
Owner Amir Surani says the decision had to be made.
“I’ve had this place for a long time and we were trying not to open this place, or not open up a vape store in this place, because of the school,” Surani says.
The city’s Building and Inspections Department did approve the location, according to Surani. He says parents have nothing to fear.
“We have a good reputation in all of my smoke shops. We never sell to any of the underage kids,” says Surani, who reassures tobacco products wont be sold here. “This store will be a complete vape store. We are going to the sell eJuice and vaping products only.”
FOX44 reached out to Hewitt’s Building and Inspections Department, but they were not available for comment.
According to the National Institutes of Health’s Monitoring The Future Study, nearly one in three students in the 12th grade reported past-year use of some kind of vaping device – and there are several health risks.
“It’s something that can easily lead into a lot of other things. I feel vaping has a lot of downsides,” Holden says.
But others aren’t worried.
“I think that parenting starts in the home, and so, I trust my kids. That what you fear is that what you attract. And so, having it put there is definitely temptation. If they’re not selling tobacco, then we’re pretty good, actually,” Moles says.
