U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke made a pit stop at McLennan Community College in Waco and spoke to over 100 people about a variety of hot topics, including immigration and gun safety.
O’Rourke is the Democratic opponent running against Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who is looking to renew his term.
O’Rourke says he wants to work with Democrats and Republicans to give “dreamers” a pathway to citizenship in our country. He also wants to keep criminals and drugs out, and says building a wall is not the solution.
The U.S. representative says he has worked on a border legislation with Republican Senator John Cornyn on a bill which will beef up resources at the border to track who and what is coming in. He says this will also add jobs in our state.
“Staffing up, investing in those ports of entry is a smart way to make our border more secure while making sure we can keep ‘dreamers’ here and allow them to contribute to their full potential and become U.S. citizens,” O’Rourke says.
O’Rourke says he’s all for the second amendment, and making changes to gun laws that could save lives.
“We can do that through universal background checks making sure that every single gun purchase goes through a background check, so that those who will are a harm to themselves, or someone in our lives or to the community do not own a gun.”
The U.S. representative is looking to ban AR15’s, bump stocks, and high capacity magazines which he calls ‘war weapons.’
