Matt Rhule led the bears to a five-win improvement in 2018, guiding the program back to a bowl game after a one-year hiatus.
Baylor Athletics Director Mack Rhoades, was asked after the game on Saturday if the 6th win in year two was validation for Coach Rhule and he didn’t hesitate, saying Matt Rhule never needed any extra-validation, in his mind.
“Matt Rhule is an unbelievable football coach,” he said. “First and foremost he’s a leader of young men. That’s first and foremost then he’s a heckuva football coach, and the text messages I’ve received right now from national media that are talking about, ‘hey great hire, unbelievable. It’s not a validation for Matt Rhule but a validation in terms of the process.”
Rhoades knew that when he took over, that the football team needed a special kind of coach, a coach that could take this program into the light and that’s something he’s seen from coach Rhule, since day one.
“This wasn’t just a football coaching position, I didn’t think when we were hiring two years ago,” Rhoades said. “There was so much noise, some of that that’s still around the program, the daubers the litigation, all that stuff, It needed somebody that could withstand that and look at it in it’s eyes. and say you know what, we’re going to be ok.”
The Bears will now await their Bowl destination, that will be made official, this weekend.
