The Baylor Mens Golf team heads to the Big 12 Championships as a three seed at Historic Southern Hills Country Club.
Southern Hills has been the site of six amateur championships and seven major championships, most recently hosting the 2007 PGA Championship.
Baylor coach Mike McGraw is very familiar with Southern Hills and after many walks down those fairways he plans to help his team as much as he can.
“I told my guys the other day, I’ve been on that golf course as a spectator coach or player, 151 rounds, since 1970,” he said. “I’ve been over there a lot. spectating watching, playing, I love the place. It’s one of my favorite places in golf.”
Senior Matthew Perrine is the only player on the roster with competitive experience at Southern Hills and he knows accuracy off the tee is crucial for he and his teammates.
“It’s definitely more target golf,” he said. “You can’t just bomb it and go find it, because you’re not going to have an angle to the green whatsoever, you’ll just be pitching back out, so don’t be afraid to hit something less than driver off the tee, keep the ball in front of you, and play the angles give yourself the best look at the green.”
Baylor will open their Championships on Monday where they will play 36 holes, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday and 18 more on Wednesday.
