LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 6 Baylor men’s tennis (20-4, 3-2 Big 12) battled back after dropping the doubles point but ultimately fell 4-3 to No. 23 Texas Tech (15-10, 2-3 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.
With the 3-2 Big 12 regular season record, BU clinched the No. 2 seed at next week’s Big 12 Championship in Lawrence, Kan. and secured a bye in the quarterfinal round.
BU fell behind early after Will Little and Matias Soto dropped a 6-3 match to Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov at the No. 2 spot. Then, Johannes Schretter and Constantin Frantzen secured a 6-3 win over Matheus Leite and Ilgiz Valiev on court three to tie things up.
Texas Tech claimed the opening point after No. 7 Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn topped No. 1 Jimmy Bendeck and Sven Lah, 6-3, at the top of the lineup.
In singles action, 22nd-ranked Schretter dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to No. 86 Parker Wynn on court one to make it a 2-0 Red Raider lead. 36th-ranked Soto got the Bears on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 116 Tommy Mylnikov at the No. 2 spot.
No. 84 Little tied up the match at 2-2 with his 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Bjorn Thomson on court four. Texas Tech then claimed the next two points on courts three and six. 94th-ranked Adrian Boitan fell 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0 on court Ilgiz Valiev, and then Frantzen dropped a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 match to Artem Kapshuk.
No. 123 Lah finished the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Franco Ribero on court five.
