UMHB Baseball Drops Double Header vs. U.T. Tyler

UMHB Press Release

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team surrendered big innings in the latter stages of both games as the Cru dropped a doubleheader to the University of Texas at Tyler Sunday in Belton. UMHB fell 7-2 in game one and lost game two 12-2. The Cru falls to 9-19 overall and 5-10 in American Southwest Conference play with the two losses. The Patriots improve to 20-10 overall and 10-5 in ASC play with the sweep.

U.T.-Tyler's five-run seventh inning was too much for the Cru to overcome in a 7-2 game one loss. UT-Tyler opened the game with three straight hits to grab a 2-0 lead, but Cru pitcher Connor Heussner worked out of a bases loaded jam to limit the damage. UMHB cut the lead to 2-1 on Austin Blanford's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. It would stay that way into the bottom of the sixth before Mason Schuh tied the game with an RBI single up the middle. The Cru had the potential go-ahead run thrown out at third on that play. Heussner turned a diving grab on a bunt attempt into a double play to erase a leadoff base runner in the top of the seventh, but Jake Burns followed an error and a walk with an RBI single to give UTT a 3-2 lead. Zach Pavelock added a two-run single to stretch the lead to 5-2 and Henry Sanchez's two-run double to center field made it 7-2. UMHB could not answer in the bottom of the frame. Heussner dropped to 1-3 despite giving up just two earned runs. Schuh had two of the Cru's eight hits. Sam Sitton picked up the win to move to 4-0. Burns and Bishop had two hits apiece for the Patriots.

U.T.-Tyler put up five runs in the fifth and four more in the eighth inning on the way to a 12-2 game two win. The Patriots scored in the top of the first, but Max Conway evened it at 1-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of that inning. U.T.-Tyler tacked on a run in the top of the second, but Conway tied it with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. The Patriots added a single run in the fourth before posting the five runs in the fifth on six hits. U.T.-Tyler scored four more in the eighth to end the contest one inning early on the run rule. Mitch Patterson had two hits for the Cru, Conway drove in both runs and Dakota Best scored both runs. Evan Samoff took the loss to fall to 1-1. Five different players had three hits for UTT, Pavelock drove in four runs and Sanchez added three RBI. Nate Imig earned the win to move to 2-0 on the season.
