RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team managed to put plenty of runs on the board, but the Cru could not overpower U.T.-Dallas’ offensive output as UMHB dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Comets Saturday in Richardson. The Cru lost 20-9 in game one and fell 18-9 in game two. UMHB drops to 9-22 overall and 5-12 in American Southwest Conference play with the two losses. UTD improves to 20-13 overall and 12-5 in the ASC with the sweep.

The Cru could not overcome three Comet innings of four or more runs in a 20-9 loss in game one. UMHB grabbed a quick 3-0 lead when Mason Schuh hit a two-run homer and Landon Dieterich tripled and scored on a fielding error in the top of the first. The Comets grabbed a 4-3 lead on two-run singles from Thomas Craig and Barry Casey in the bottom of the second. UTD added two more runs in the bottom of the third to stretch the lead to 6-3. Dakota Best’s sacrifice fly pulled the Cru to within 6-4 in the top of the fourth. The Comets would tack on eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by two-run homers from Craig and Josh Covey to push the lead out to 14-4. Austin Blanford and Sam Wheatley singled home runs in the fifth for UMHB, but UTD added five runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to make it 20-6. Mitch Patterson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Best added a two-run double in the top of the seventh to cut it to the final margin. Connor Heussner took the loss to drop to 1-4 on the season. Best, Schuh and Dieterich had two hits apiece for the Cru. Jamie Andriot earned the win for UTD to move to 7-2 and Casey had four hits and drove in five runs for the Comets in the victory.

UTD jumped out to an early lead and the Cru comeback bid fell short in an 18-9 game two loss. The Comets scored three runs in first, two in the second and one in the third for a 6-0 lead. Caleb Davis UMHB on the board with an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth. UTD added a run in the bottom of that frame, but the Cru scored three in the top of the fifth on a Max Conway home run. The Comets scored four in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-4, but Malek Bolin’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth cut it to 11-6. UTD scored one in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Braden Letney scored on a balk and Patterson added a sacrifice fly for UMHB in the top of the eighth to make it a 14-8 game, but the Comets would score four more in the bottom of the eighth. Cameron Wachsmann hit a pinch-hit solo home run for the Cru in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring. Best had three hits for UMHB and Conway, Dieterich and Bolin added two hits apiece. Evan Samoff took the loss for the Cru to fall to 1-2 on the season. Ryan Burciaga had four hits and five RBI for the Comets and Ruben Renteria got the win to move to 4-3 on the season.

The two teams will close out the series with an 11 am single game on Sunday. UMHB will then close out its non-conference schedule with a 6 pm single game at Southwestern University Tuesday in Georgetown.
